About performance

A two-act opera, performed in German.

Beethoven's Fidelio is a gem among operas: an unclassifiable, unique creation by a genius composer. The first version of the opera was premiered in 1805, its final likeness saw the light of day in 1814. The story of the courageous Leonora -who launches a battle against evil to save her unjustly imprisoned husband - is a celebration of love that simultaneously plots the violent collision of idealism and reality. The work is akin to a fiery political manifesto. In Fidelio, Beethoven manifests himself as a revolutionary who – with the powerful force of his music - sides with the suffering and the oppressed against the manipulator and cynic for whom morality and respect for people are merely empty words who extends his power to subjugate others and use them to his advantage. In this sense, the message in Ludwig van Beethoven’s opera still remains relevant some two hundred years on.
