About performance

Drame lyrique in five acts with prologue, performed in French.

It has only been an exceptional success to create in opera a pendant to Shakespeare drama. The great Verdi only managed to achieve that to his satisfaction in his two works of elder age, Falstaff and Othello. Yet the French opera composers grasped the challenge of coming to terms with literary ad drama qualities of the great pieces differently. More than the immediate drama and fidelity or complexity of interpretation, they focused on musical interpretation of a story. Further intention was to use the music in its own means, to make melody and form express sui generis the point of what is being portrayed. The tendency to great narratives of a performance was quite a national feature of theatre aesthetics.

Charles Gounod, one of the most successful French authors, has documented all this in both of his major works, Faust and Margarita based on Goethe, and in Romeo and Juliet by the Elizabethan master. The melodic and harmonious beauty, and emotional intensity are the strongest arguments for the interpretation of the Shakespearian story.
